This week, meet Giles. He is a drum teacher with The Piano Studio; we are thankful to him for taking the time to answer our questions!
1. When did you first start playing your instrument?At age 10, after being amazed by drummers at the Aurora Canada Day Parade. My mum signed me up in a marching band.
2. Who was your favorite drum teacher and why?
I was lucky enough to spend time with Alex Lifeson and Buddy Rich one-on-one. Alex taught me to understand recording studio performing. Mr. Rich said “Son, play every chance you get. You never know what you’ll learn.”
3. What made you decide to pursue teaching as a job?
After many years in a job I didn’t love, I decided to take a risk and do things I do love.
4. What is your favorite piece to play?
Whatever I’m playing at the moment I’m playing it.
5. Do you play in a band/orchestra?
Yes. Several bands and orchestra, live & studio.
6. What is one of your favorite songs/artists/styles of music, and why?
Musical Theatre. Huge cast, emotional content, big stage, sound, lights, very exciting!
7. What other interests do you have, unrelated to music?
My family, kayaking, camping, skating, my dog.
8. Did you ever think about wanting to stop music? If so, what made you continue?
Stop? No.
9. What is your advice to parents whose children are having difficulty finding or making the time to practice at home?
Find someone to practice with. Have them see live musicians play.
10. If you could learn to play another instrument, what would it be?
Guitar, Bass, Piano, Vocals, Violin, Theremin
